Exhibition (online exhibition)
You can see at ISSUU / 전체 전시 내용은 ISSUU에서 확인 가능
"My architecture is in no sense conceived in plans, but instead in spaces (cubes). I do not design any floor plans, facades, cross-sections. I design spaces. For me, there is no ground floor, upper floor, etc… For me, it is only about contiguous, continual spaces, rooms, vestibules, terraces, etc. ”
Loos' original interior concept, the so-called Raumplan, represented a new spatial solution based on living rooms, not on an area by the floor. Its trademark is a dramatic gradation of the heights of the individual rooms according to their function and symbolic meaning, composed around the central staircase. It enables both visual interconnection of rooms and play with spatial illusions, as well as maximum use of the interior space of the house. Rooms located on different horizontal levels are interconnected by several steps of stairs.
For the first time Loos used Raumplan in the staircase vestibule of the Vienna Goldman & Salatsch department store. He further developed his groundbreaking idea in the construction of various Viennese family houses, such as the Villa Moller and the Villa Scheu. In the dining room of the villa Rufer he accentuated the dining room's intimacy relative to the adjacent drawing room by raising its floor level by several steps. Advanced examples of Raumplan include the interior of the Tristan Tzara house in Paris and the unfinished house project for Josephine Baker.
Through Raumplan, Loos formulates a completely new view of the interior space and the arrangement of the rooms in terms of its three-dimensionality. The inside of residential houses designed by this Viennese architect is often created by rooms that penetrate one another, divided into several levels. Together they create an open and fluid space. Loos was very interested in the idea of three-dimensional architecture in his Paris era. His family houses are designed with alternate levels of individual spaces, staircases are sometimes quite complicated formations. The interconnection of spaces and bonds between them emphasize their transparency.
The exhibition, prepared on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Adolf Loos, will focus both on the presentation of Loos's main realizations and projects (villas Tzara, Müller, Winternitz, Bauer, Baker) and the echoes of the Raumplan concept in the work of following architects.
