This essay first appeared in Architectural Design, vol.48, no.4 (1978), pp.267-77, and was reprinted in an anthology of the author's writings with the title Translations from Drawing to Building and Other Essays, AA Documents 2 (London : Architectural Association,1997), pp.55-92. The version given here is the original one, albeit incorporating some minor alterations from the AA publication and to the footnote apparatus. The images are those that correspond to both the English and the German versions.
